I just noticed a whirring sound in my engine that goes away when I accelerate but gets worse when I turn?

What could this be? My husband is a truck driver and is on the road ALL the time and I know nothing about cars. It is a Mercury Sable 1996 with a V6 engine .. that is all I know. PLEASE HELP!
