HD DVD upscaler is there a way of not buying a new dvd player and using an adapter to to bump the resolution?

I don't wan't to go out and buy blue ray / HD dvd's i don't see the point it's a gimmick for techie morons or people with too much expendable cash if you can emulate why spend ?
