How do you permanently get rid of a bad freezer smell?

My son recently made an interstate move and, thinking the trip would be a quick one, left meat and other frozen goods in his deep freezer. Because of unplanned delays in reaching his destination, everything inside rotted. Months later, the freezer still smells horrid and he has been unable to re-stock it. Any suggestions??
